Charles Showalter, DDS

Charles Showalter, DDS

Charles initially chose to direct his own inherent creative energies into a thriving dental practice. He considers dental work to be a form of art and found extensive creative opportunities through the development of breakthrough dental procedures and improved processes. He was drawn to the profession of dentistry —to which he was dedicated for over 35 years— because of an interest in enhancing the quality of people’s lives.

Charles grew up with his namesake and father who was a prominent commercial artist and illustrator and whose work continues to be highly recognizable and collectible, especially in pop-culture circles. Because of his father, art was ever-present in his home. With his professional retirement from dentistry, Charles followed in his father’s footsteps and turned to art in its more traditional forms. In his own paintings, he favors capturing the human form and in telling the human story through these images.

With the works featured on this website, Charles invites you to let your own experience and heart inform what you see—to read the lines and spaces, colors and shadings and create your own meaning of these images.

About THE ARTIST

After retiring from an active practice of dentistry in 2010, I now enjoy the challenge of learning and making art nearly full-time.

Although not obvious to most, I found dentistry itself to be an art form. Now, having turned my attention to painting, I find the human face to be the most captivating image to paint. It is my intention to tell a story through the human figure and facial expression.

I want to thank the instructors of the DuPage Art League for their invaluable instruction, encouragement and assistance.

Note:

For many of the paintings, I use reference photos taken by me. And though I give credit when I can, I have also used internet photo images from uncredited photographers.

I would like to acknowledge the artist, Carrie Ballantyne, whose original oils were the source of several of my pastel cowgirl images.

I would also like to acknowledge the invaluable instruction, encouragement and assistance from _____ through the Wheaton Art League.
